How to use the map

  1. Enter a place name or postcode in the search box (top right), or zoom in to an area
  2. Zoom in to view Shape tool   and use this to draw the area you wish to license
  3. Click once to begin, then at each corner and double click to complete the shape
  4. Select Get results
  5. Download survey co-ordinates (black dots on the map) for uncertain areas of peat depth
  6. Use the Reset button if you need to check a new area

The final step is to carry out your survey using the co-ordinates provided (if applicable).

Map layers

The Map layers drop-down allows you to toggle on:

  • peatland areas
  • uncertain areas (where peat depth is not known)
  • non-peatland areas
  • areas that may be restricted by the muirburn code

Classic, Outdoor, Light and Road allow you to change the map background.

Use + and - in the top left to zoom in or out.

Survey details

A full survey is required to license uncertain areas for a non-peatland purpose.

If you apply for an uncertain area without survey data, it will be treated as peatland.

Find out more in our muirburn licence guidance.

How this map works

The map highlights areas of peatland, non-peatland and uncertain peat depth. It will tell you what level of survey is required.

Areas that do not need to be surveyed are automatically removed. View map data.
